Prevention
•
Select perennial swamps (IVS) as they retain water throughout the year
•
Develop swamp with required structures (bunds, canals, inlet and outlet etc.) to meet the irrigation needs
•
Use resistant varieties (NERICA L19 and L20) with high tillering ability
•
Brush, clear, plough, and puddle before transplanting
•
Also, remove alternate hosts such as Brachiaria, Cyperus, and Cynodon grass species
•
Drain plots before transplanting to kill existing eggs and larvae
•
Transplant seedlings in the correct month (April-June)
•
Transplant seedlings at 21 days after nursing
•
Irrigate plot 7 days after planting to maintain rice growth
•
Apply appropriate agronomic practices e.g. weeding, water management, fertilizer application (N:P:K-20:20:0) 5 bags and 2 bags Urea per hectare
Monitoring
•
The caterpillars live inside the tube, feed on leaves, float over the water to move from plant to plant and defoliate rice plant before reaching maximum tillering stage
•
Closely inspect plots with transplanted seedlings after two (2) weeks for the presence of adult caseworms (moths)
•
Also look for affected rice with signs of caseworm (e.g. eggs, larvae, and adult)
•
Observe for symptoms of infestation: Cut tips of rice leaves; Larvae floating on the water; Leaves folded in the form of a case or passage; Flying adults
Direct Control
•
Flood the plots for 24 hours to drown eggs, then drain for 3-5 days to get rid of the larvae
Direct Control
Apply insecticide such as Fenitrothion (e.g. Tricel 35% c.c.)
WHO Class II (Moderately hazardous); Apply 65-70 mls/gallon of water; Apply when signs of infection are observed especially at vegetative stage; Apply in the morning with the absence of rain or heavy wind
Diazinon granules
WHO Class II; Diazinon granules; 10.0 kg/acre; Apply when signs of insect are observed especially at the vegetative stage; Apply in the morning with the absence of rain or heavy wind
