Whether you're playing a game of baseball or just cheering on your favorite team, the cap you wear will get dirty one way or another. Many washing machines will ruin the shape of your hat, but you can clean it thoroughly right in your kitchen using your dishwasher. With a gentle cycle, you can make your hat look like it's brand new!

Check the material on your hat’s tag before washing it. Look for the manufacturer’s tag inside the ballcap. Materials like cotton or synthetics are safe to put inside your dishwasher, but cardboard or wool could get damaged. If the tag says “hand wash only,” don’t put the hat in the dishwasher.
- If your hat has frayed edges or tears, consider washing the hat by hand instead.
- If the hat has sentimental value, don’t put it in the dishwasher since there’s always a small risk of damage.

Use a hat frame if you’re worried about your hat losing its shape. Hat frames or shapers are used to protect the shape and prevent bending. Open the frame and set your hat over the convex dome so the brim is inside. Snap the frame closed to secure the hat.^{[1]

First use a product for pre-treating the stains if you have one handy and let the hat sit for 10 minutes, then launder it on the cold cycle with regular detergent, but do not use bleach or products marketed as bleach alternatives. Then, keep the hat out of the dryer and allow it to air dry. Washing your hat in the dryer can result in the brim or other parts of the hat being deformed and you should never wash a wool hat.

What are some good dishwasher detergents for cleaning ball caps in the dishwasher?

None! Most of them contain cleansing chemicals that can bleach the color out or just break down the material. I've pretreated with Oxi-Clean and had good results on whites as well as colors with no fading.
