Intent to assess Champion's rehabilitation and possible return

Current MotoGP World champion Valentino Rossi will return to riding today, barely a month after breaking his leg, his Yamaha team have announced.

The Italian has made an excellent recovery since the accident at his home grand prix at Mugello on 5 June, Yamaha said, adding that Rossi would ride a world superbike at a private test in Misano, Italy.

"He has decided to proceed with the test ride in order to better understand his current physical condition," said the statement. "Riding a racing motorcycle will help Valentino and his doctors to plan the next stage of his rehabilitation programme in order that he may return to racing as soon as he feels confident to do so."

Rossi, 31, said in June that he hoped to return to racing at the Czech grand prix on 15 August and has been walking on crutches since the end of last month.

His Spanish team mate Jorge Lorenzo is currently leading the championship by 52 points after winning the last three races. Rossi has slipped to seventh overall.
