  As one of the finest British songwriters of his generation, it’s perhaps surprising that Alex Turner hasn’t yet had sufficiently itchy feet to see him launch a solo career in earnest; perhaps his quick breakaway to work on The Last Shadow Puppets with his pal Miles Kane as enough for him, but as yet, the only work that he’s done solely under his own name and nobody else’s is the soundtrack to Richard Ayoade’s coming-of-age comedy-drama Submarine back in 2011. Then again, when the alternative is remaining frontman of one of the world’s biggest rock bands, you might well ask “why stray?” You do wonder, though, what might happen if Turner’s ego continues to expand at the blisteringly fast rate that it currently appears to be and he does decide to go it alone; would he go down the Noel Gallagher path, of occasionally playing solo shows and reworking Arctic Monkeys songs and playing the odd cover, before eventually starting a new career in earnest when older and mellower? Or does he need to be front and centre with the band behind him, like the younger and considerably less sensible Gallagher? We might never know the answer, but he might just surprise us; he might just make any solo gigs he does play about nothing more than some of the greatest British rock songs that anybody’s written in the past decade or so.
