THE work of extraterrestrials or an Australian beef marketing and research team?
A 150-metre by 125-metre crop circle spotted in an oat crop paddock had those in Scone talking in hushed whispers this week.
Why were aliens encouraging the consumption of beef? Was it anything to do with their imminent arrival on earth? Who was this almighty beef oracle? Would he be a vengeful or forgiving leader?
Then, as fast as it mysteriously appeared, the source and meaning behind the crop circle was revealed. Meat & Livestock Australia said the puzzling planetary artwork was created by professional UK crop circle artist Julian Richardson as part of the cattle marketing and research company’s latest campaign to promote beef in winter.
The design represents the position of the planets at the exact moment of our winter solstice – the longest night of the year – but with a mysterious replacement for the sun. ‘‘This crop circle was designed to introduce the beef oracle, positioned in the centre of the design,’’ Meat and Livestock spokesman Lachlan Bowtell said.
The circle’s message is for all Australians to make sure they cook and enjoy a hearty beef winter meal to celebrate the longest night of the year, he said.
