‘The Nun 2’ movie review: This Nun is frightfully forgettable

If the devil had a universe to thrive in like the superheroes, then there is no better place from them to raise a scare than James Wan’s creepy ‘Conjuring’ series. What started off as a standalone film was soon turned into a multiverse, spawning off spin-offs and sequels tracking various timelines of characters in the ‘Conjuring’ world.

In 2018, a film was released that surprised everyone and turned out to be a sleeper hit. ‘The Nun’, whose poster had a menacing-looking woman dressed up in holy attire, but having unholy intentions and a death stare in those demonic eyes, soon became a part of pop culture. In its follow up, we see the return of this demonic nun aka Valak (Bonnie Aarons), who is now on the hunt for a pair of eyes that will give her super power and more strength to cause death and destruction. Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is at the forefront of leading an almost Robert Langdon-like mission to stop the Nun from finding those magical pair of eyes. Along the way, we get to see a lot of history of Catholic culture and the church.

But, does ‘The Nun 2’ provide a good scare? Well, the answer, unfortunately, can’t be a straight yes or a no because it’s a follow-up to a movie that wasn’t a great horror film in the first place. Michael Chaves, who has directed ‘The Nun 2’, gets caught up in creating the setting than focusing on writing sequences that will genuinely invoke fear. Farmiga as Irene is fantastic, but we get to see very little of Valak. For a film that has the name of the central character in its title, the makers should have given her more screen time.

However, for those who have enjoyed ‘The Nun’, they will definitely queue up to track what the Nun is up to. Despite having such a strong central character on its poster with a great back story, ‘The Nun 2’ spends more time on the pauses and long dialogue scenes than on the scares. ‘Nun the less’, watch it if you are invested in the ‘Conjuring’ universe.
