🔹️PROCESS
It was made with a tool called tjanting, instead of stamped or printing. Every dots and lines were hand drawn individually and then dyed, boiled, rewaxed, and the process was repeated , depending on the complexities of the design. A piece like this can take four to six months or more to produce.
🔹️ABOUT
It is in phoenix and floral and fauna design.
The phoenix is from the Chinese influence in Java and it symbolises greatness and beauty.
The pair of birds are depicted both facing up and down. But this is deliberate. The sarong is meant to be worn in several ways, showing each birds on the front or back, or with both heads on the front. Whichever way, it is meant to be symmetrical. Hence before wrapping the wearer would make sure that the birds which would be visible were not depicted upside down. Therefore the upside down birds act as an instruction as to which side of the fabric to be wrapped first.
