TruFocals: High-Tech Fix for Aging Eyes?

(CBS) A California company has come up with what it calls a clear alternative to bifocals and reading glasses for people whose aging eyes have trouble focusing close-up:

Eyeglasses that let the wearer manually adjust the focus for distortion-free vision at any distance.

The "TruFocal" eyeglasses have gotten raves from Popular Science and the Wall Street Journal, among others.

But some critics see a downside to the glasses  - at least for people who aren't eager to look like Harry Potter. Though the glasses come in several colors, they're available in only one shape - circular.

Each TruFocal lens is actually two lenses sandwiching a silicone-based fluid, according to the company's website. The wearer adjusts the focus - near, far, or anywhere in between - by moving a slider on the bridge of the glasses. The lenses can be customized to account for nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The glasses are intended for people suffering from a condition doctors call presbyopia, in which a loss of elasticity in the eye's crystalline lens makes it hard to focus close-up.
