    I bought this camera as a second body to my D300s, as something that was lighter to carry when out and about, but still able to perform at a similar level to the D300s. I originally purchased a D7000 but it had serious AF issues and I was generally underwhelmed by the camera, especially after all the hype. The D90 in comparison was not only cheaper but felt more serious to me, and although light weight it feels solid and well built. Out of the box it produces images that are crisp and focused, and retains much of the functionality of the D300s.

    The D90 comes from a long run of cameras, evolving from the D70 and D80. As such it may seem a little dated but it is a well tested design which over almost 9 years has been refined and developed into something which is reliable and bug free. The dual sd/ flash card facility on the D300s is something I have found useful but not essential, so I am happy with the single card facility on the D90.

    I have worked in and taught in the photographic business for 35 years. I know that photographers come in all shapes and sizes, and are all placed somewhere between the artist at one end and the technical mechanic at the other. The point you are situated on that line will dictate what you look for in a camera, some people will find the D90 too complicated (many experienced photographers still only feel comfortable with film cameras) whereas others will find it lacks the settings and buttons they love to play with. The type of work you do also dictates what you look for in a camera, to a sports photographer 9fps may be a must whereas a studio photographer is unlikely to have any need for it.

    If the D90 does not have the specs you require then it is unlikely you will be reading this, if you have a budget available that looks like a telephone number it is also unlikely you will be reading this. This camera is ideal for anyone who does not require specialist facilities on a camera, but wants something that can take photographs that, for all practical purposes, will be as good as those produced by any other camera. A camera with full manual override that allows the experienced photographer to use the skills he has to the full, and the beginner the opportunity to develop those skills when they are ready. It may be an older design at the end of its run, but it is still a very capable camera, it's much cheaper than the 7K, and the money saved can be put towards extra lenses which are always a good investment. Every digital camera eventually ends up as a paper weight, something I know only too well having spend out 5k on a D1 many years ago and even more on a Hasselblad and Mamiya kit before that, but at the sort of price you can pick a D90 up for at the moment you should get your money's worth out of it before it ends up on the shelf.

    Zunächst zum Hintergrund der kurzen Besprechung, die keinen umfassenden Anspruch hat und nur einige Anhaltspunkte liefern soll. Ich würde mich selbst als ambitionierten Amateur bezeichnen und fotografiere seit 1989 mit Spiegelreflex-Kameras, zunächst mit der sehr guten Ricoh KR-10x und ab 2000 mit der geliebten Nikon F80. Vor allem letztere ist mein Vergleichsmaßstab bei der Bewertung der Nikon D90. Seit 2000 digitalisiere ich auch analoge Aufnahmen mit einem Filmscanner, ab 2002 hauptsächlich Dias, womit ich schon eine erhebliche Verbesserung erreicht hatte. Man erhält aber kaum noch verwertbare Entwicklungen von analogem Film durch die Labore. Die D90 verwende ich seit Juli 2010.

    Im Vergleich mit der F80 ('der besten semiprofessionellen Kamera ihrer Zeit') liegen nach der Rabattaktion bei der D90 beide Kameras nicht nur beim selben Anspruch, sondern auch bei etwa demselben Preis, umgerechnet rund 1200 DM (bei der F80 hatte ich aber noch ein billiges Zoom dabei). Auch deshalb würde ich die D90 als Nachfolgerin der F80 bezeichnen. Was sich in den dazwischenliegenden 10 Jahren im Bereich der Fotografie entwickelt hat, ist allerdings gewaltig. -

    Zunächst überraschend bei der Nikon D90 waren für mich - gegenüber der Nikon F80 - das höhere Gewicht, die geringere Größe und der laute Verschluss.

    Die Kamera liegt sehr gut in der Hand, auch ohne den Batteriepack. Die Bedienkonzept ist logisch und für Nikon-Fotografen - ich nehme an, auch für Um- und Aufsteiger von anderen Herstellern - ohne große Umstellung leicht und schnell anzuwenden.

    Die Bildqualität ist sehr gut und stellt alles in den Schatten, was man mit analogem Kleinbild erreichen konnte. Klare (nicht zu gesättigte!) Farben, scharfe, aber natürliche Konturen und eine hohe Auflösung.

    Die Farbwiedergabe ist allerdings noch nicht perfekt (12 bit Farbtiefe statt 16 bit bei der D700). Ich finde Grüntöne noch nicht ganz realistisch (aber besser als auf Film). Rottöne verschwimmen (rote Blüten), ein Problem, das ich auch mit dem Nikon Filmscanner habe. (Auf die Möglichkeiten umfangreicher Nachbearbeitung am Rechner gehe ich hier nicht ein.)

    Bei der F80 sah ich manchmal eine Tendenz zur Unterbelichtung, die D90 tendiert nach meiner Auffassung in manchen Situationen zur Überbelichtung. Es gibt aber viele Möglichkeiten der Korrektur.

    Der Sucher ist sehr hell, aber nur mäßig groß und kleiner als derjenige der F80. Gerdae für Brillenträger nicht ideal. Der Sucher der D90 hat leider auch nur eine 96%-ige Bildabdeckung (der Sucher der F80 hatte 95%). Dass man hier noch nicht volle 100% anbietet, ist das einzige, was wirklich ein Manko ist, zumal der Ausschnitt mit ungleichmäßigen Seitenabständen auf dem tatsächlich aufgenommenen Bild liegt, d.h. nicht auf diesem zentriert ist.

    Bei der Sensorgröße hätte ich das Vollformat bevorzugt, jedoch ist mir dieses momentan noch zu teuer. Alle meine teuren Objektive (ich setze fast ausschließlich Objektive mit fester Brennweite ein) funktionieren aber einwandfrei an der D90. Die Brennweitenverlängerung ist zwar unerwünscht, bringt aber auch Vorteile. So ist jetzt aus meinem Lieblingsobjektiv, dem Micro-Nikkor 60 mm / 2.8 D, ein Makrobjektiv mit 90 mm Brennweite geworden. Damit habe ich in den vergangenen Wochen einige Aufnahmen mit überragender Bildqualität gemacht, wie sie auf Kleinbild-Film nicht denkbar waren.

    Da mein kürzestes Objektiv aber 28 mm hat (am DX-Format 42 mm), habe ich zur Zeit kein Weitwinkelobjektiv.

    Die Menüs sind meist, aber nicht immer logisch. Es ist schwierig und nicht intuitiv möglich, aus dem Verkleinerungsmodus bei der Wiedergabe wieder herauszufinden.

    Bei den Standardeinstellungen erstaunt, dass diese nicht auf die höchste Auflösung (JPEG fine) gesetzt wurde.

    Insgesamt eine sehr gute Kamera auf dem Stand der Zeit. Wenn man bedenkt, dass man mit dem Nachfolgemodell (D95?) zwar ein paar Kleinigkeiten mehr bekommen wird (noch lichtstärkerer Sensor, wenige MP mehr, HD-Video), aber auch nach den bisherigen Informationen gegenüber dem derzeitigen rabattierten Preis der D90 etwa das doppelte bezahlen muss, sollte man sich fragen, ob es einem das wert ist.

    Ich persönlich habe lange auf die D800 gewartet, dann, als ich nicht mehr warten wollte, zwischen der D700, D300 und D90 geschwankt. Meine letztendliche Wahl habe ich nicht bereut. (Trotzdem werde ich irgendwann wieder auf Vollformat wechseln.)

    Après une prise en main studieuse, cet appareil se révèle excellent. En mode manuel on trouve ses marques très vite.
    Le plaisir de retrouver ses objectifs acquis depuis longtemps un AF 24 mm F/2.8, un AF micro 55 F/1.8 et un 200 mm f/4. Le dommage est que les focales sont multipliées par 1.5, du coup le 24 devenant un 36 mm, il faudra acquérir un 14 ou un 16 mm.
    Le format RAW permet de travailler les images. Ne pas hésiter à télécharger GIMP 2.6 et UFRaw qui sont de véritables bonheurs gratuits.
    Seul le D700 vaudrait un choix alternatif, mais il est trois fois plus cher...
    Côté Amazon, délai extra rapide, toutefois carton un peu grand.
