This would have been easier to install with 2 people but I am an impatient old lady. I now call myself elderly at age 72 because that is what the newspaper use as a description when they have articles about people over the age of 65 that are involved in accidents, crimes, etc. But I digress....l
I ordered a pair of these 4 step stair railings along with a rail extension for my lanai (deck) that needed safeguards. I had also ordered a 180° connector which turned out to be the wrong connection for making a right angle joint between the stair railings and the edge of my lanai. When I did an online chat with the company (they are open late for those who live in Hawaii and everyone else shuts down by lunchtime for us), I was SO unexpectedly surprised at how they were committed to making sure that I was successful in my project.
They sent out a 90° adjustable oval connector and then sent me oval top railings and extensions free of charge and told me to keep what I had rather than returning them! This must have cost them a fortune - more than the original order - which was already such a bargain to me.
Their product is made in the USA and of excellent quality. Heavy duty steel with clean finish. I needed to have 1/2" cut off the extension to fit and fortunately have a brother with every tool imaginable saw it off for me with a specialized chop saw. The rails are so heavy duty, a hack saw would take years and an angle grinder would make for a fire hazard with sparks flying everywhere. If I was smarter I would have asked him to come over and help me with the installation, but I guess I wanted the glory for myself. The older I get, the more hard headed I become.
Each set of rails comes with all the tool accessories needed - sockets to fit, an extension for the socket that fit on 1/4" hex shank drills/screwdrivers, 2 sizes of drill bits, a ruler, pencil and the cutest little acrylic level tool to ensure your legs and extension rail are plumb. You do need a good drill and it would help to have a skinny drill bit to start the holes that the self tapping screws for metal because I didn't have the strength to push the drill into the vertical and upside down screws at the very end.
I did have to use some washers under the plates when attaching the legs to my stairs and I must have looked nuts trying to hold the assembly straight while setting it all in place, but nobody was watching and after a couple of hours of grunting and using my head as a third hand, the railing legs were secured and plumb (hurray hurray!) and the rest of the install was easy as pie. Speaking of pie, I really blew it for Thanksgiving while making my mother's recipe for pie crust. I have one of those hot/cold water dispensers and I kept adding the hot water instead of cold water to the mixture as I kneaded the Crisco to the flour. It was the worst crust ever. But again, I digress. The rest of the install was as easy as pie filling.
I now have a beautiful railing for the steps and lanai that I just love. I marvel at how wonderful it is to have the security of something to hold onto and wonder how I did without them this past year. The most marvelous part of this is finding such a great company that has such quality products at such a low price and with the highest level of attention to customer satisfaction as CR Handrails.
