Dr Marty Natalegawa has had a distinguished, decades-long career as an Indonesian diplomat, and was the Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs between 2009–2014. He has served in a variety of diplomatic posts during his career, including as Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Court of St. James’s and also to Ireland, and the Director General for ASEAN Cooperation. He served as the Indonesian Foreign Minister while Indonesia was Chair of ASEAN in 2011. 

He is the author of a book titled “Does ASEAN Matter? A view from Within”. He currently serves as a member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High Level Advisory Board on Mediation.

Dr Natalegawa studied in the United Kingdom and Australia, completing his PhD in International Relations at the Australian National University in 1993. In 2016 the University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his role in building Australia-Indonesia ties and his wider leadership in Southeast Asia. In 2013 Macquarie University also awarded him a Doctor of Letters honoris causa for similar contributions.
