Cristiano Ronaldo decided to show off by using only his back to pass the ball to Xabi Alonso. The Athletico players were not amused and thought that he was mocking them.
Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo has explained his back pass against Atletico Madrid in the city derby at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening was an act of invention on his part.
In the closing minutes of the match, Ronaldo took a cross-shot at the Atleti goal that David De Gea could only punch back to him. However, instead of controlling the ball with his feet, the Portugal international passed it towards Xabi Alonso with his back (which can be seen here).
Atletico players complained about it with Jose Antonio Reyes calling it an act of “provocation” and Alvaro Dominguez labelling it as “silliness”.
However, Ronaldo believes otherwise and posted this statement on his Twitter page, as reported by Spanish sports daily Marca, “Sometimes you have to be creative.”
Madrid defeated Atletico 2-0 to remain in pole position in the table.
