March 16 In History: Dian Sastro Was Born And Grown To Become A Popular Culture Icon

JAKARTA - Today, March 16, Indonesian actress Dian Sastrowardoyo has a birthday. Dian Sastrowardoyo was born in 1982. Dian Sastro's father is Ariawan Sastrowardoyo, an artist. Meanwhile, her mother, Dewi Parwati Sastrowardoyo, is a lecturer at a university.

Early in her career, Dian Sastro was involved in modeling. Her modeling career started from the Cover Girl event. The talent search event for the model at Gadis magazine opened many avenues for Dian Sastro for her career in the world of entertainment.

After Cover Girl, Dian Sastro entered into a video clip model. The first video clip starring Dian Sastro was the song Gerimis from the KLa Project.

"At that time, it was a music video. So it was our era for Cover Girls in 1996, coincidentally the Cover Girl program itself had audio-visual documentation. Edited it was like MTV at that time", said Dian Sastro during a Live Instagram with @kinosaurusjakarta.

What's with love?

Dian Sastro's debut was a film called Bintang Jatuh in 2000. However, the film was not shown in theaters. The following year, 2001, Dian Sastro returned to play a film entitled Pasir Berbisik. In the film, Dian Sastro shares the screen with senior actress Christine Hakim.

Dian Sastro's name skyrocketed after she acted in the film Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What's with Love?) The film, which was released on February 7, 2002, depicts the story of a pair of teenagers, Rangga and Cinta.

Together with Nicholas Saputra, Dian Sastro has succeeded in describing the life of adolescents and the happiness of love. What's with love? become part of popular culture, especially in the aspect of the film.

Because of her good acting in What's with Love? Dian Sastro received the Commendable Actress award at the 2002 Bandung Film Festival. Dian Sastro was also awarded the Best Actress award at the 2004 Indonesian Film Festival.

Apart from the film directed by Riri Riza, Dian Sastro also won various Best Actress awards at the Deauville Asian Film Festival, France, and the 15th Singapore International Film Festival for her acting in the film Pasir Berbisik.

Venture into film production

Not being complacent as an actress, Dian Sastro spread her wings to become a film producer. Dian Sastro is a producer and actress in a film that airs on Netflix, entitled Guru-Guru Gokil. This film is the first Indonesian film to choose a live release on a streaming service.

Guru-Guru Gokil tells the story of Taat's (Gading Marten) struggle to become a substitute teacher at a school because of a situation. His friendship with the teachers at the school changes his point of view about success.

Dian Sastro also directed the omnibus film Quarantine Tales which was inspired by stories of the quarantine period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being a director in this project is Dian Sastro's first experience.

In this omnibus project, Dian Sastrowardoyo raised the title Nougat. This film tells the story of three brothers who can only meet virtually.

For Dian, her first experience as a director in a film title is both very challenging and interesting. She also admitted that she was lucky in her first project as a director to get a strong team to support her.

"I'm lucky that in this first production I got fantastic actresses and actors", said Dian at a virtual press conference on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
