TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Starting January 5, 2019 for the first time in the history of the Corps, The US Marine Corps is set to integrate men and women during boot camp.

"The decision is made by the Marine Corps leadership in supporting training efficiency and it is the first in the training history of Marine Corps recruitment," the Marine Corps statement said, as reported by the ABC News (6/1/2019).

"On January 5, 2019, the 3rd Recruitment Training Battalion above the Marine Corps, Parris Island Depot, will begin their training cycle with a female platoon and five male platoons," the Marine Corps added.

The American Marine Corps is different from other corps, because previously it did not fully integrate women and men during recruitment training.

Even in Parris Island Recruit Depot in South Carolina, the first three battalions were all male, while the fourth battalion was all female, according to the ABC News report.

But the change is called non-permanent, because according to a Marine Corps spokesman, that corps will definitely see how the platoon performs in this model as well it continues to evaluate this system.

The Marine Corps, which has the lowest percentage of women among other units, is below 9 percent, including 50 female candidates into all male battalions because the recruitment class is usually much smaller in the winter.

The integration allows Parris Island not to activate the 4th Recruitment Training Battalion staff for a female platoon.

But the recruitment of women will still be led by female trainer instructors, but will stay in barracks with their male colleagues.

"This training cycle of around 300 recruitments will give Recruit Depot staff to score the results, achievements, and challenges in training, logistics, and the impact of resources from the company's training model," the Marine Corps said.

Therefore, the Marine Corps has increased the amount of training conducted by men and women altogether. (*)
