Large group of multicellular algae. Most are live in marine waters. some are located in cooler water within the northern hemisphere.

There are 1500 – 2000 brown algae species known worldwide. Their body is vary from small filaments to leaf like thallus. Brown algae have largest algae species in the algae world. It may reach 200ft in length.

Kelp (laminaria).

Eukaryotic group and most prominently by having chloroplasts surrounded by four membranes. Some research said that this chloroplasts origin from symbiotic relationship between basal eukaryote and another eukaryotic organism. have fucoxanthin pigments.it is responsible for greenish brown color of the algae.store their food in laminarin and transport throughout their body from mannitol. cell wall is made from cellulose and algin.

Reproduction..

Can reproduce sexually or asexually. Brown algae reproduce by flagellated spores (motile zoospores) and gametes. most of them have two flagella.

Importance..

Brown algae have both environmental and economic importance. Brown algae are important as foods. also as human foods. some species provide very diverse ecosystems.it is important as habitat for large variety of species. also it is very important in carbon fixation.
