Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills are a geological formation in the Bohol province of the Philippines and one of the most popular local attractions.

The hills which spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers are covered with green grass that turns brown during the dry season,—like dark chocolate. Local people believe that the hills appeared as a result of fighting between two giant men. They were throwing rocks and sand at each other for days, but finally decided to become friends. The giants disappeared but the mess they caused remains attractive for people even nowadays. Geologists themselves aren't sure about its origins. Strange but you won't see a single shrub or tree growing on any of these curious hills.

This natural phenomenon is placed on the provincial flag, symbolizing the abundance of natural attractions. Of almost 1,247 hills, two have been developed into tourist resorts. If you decide to enjoy the magnificent views, take some chocolate with you.

The hills cannot be climbed—one could enjoy the panoramas from the viewing decks. Although you can come at any time of the year, it's recommended to avoid the hot and rainy season lasting from August to November—along with the weather inconveniences you'll see very little in common with chocolate, as the hills are lush green during rainy months. December to March is cool and best, March to July might be exceedingly hot but still good.
