Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has backed out of Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson’s New Year’s Eve special after being exposed to COVID-19.
The NYE spectacular is set to air live from Miami on Dec. 31 starting at 10:30 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
“After the holiday I found out I was exposed to COVID. I’ve tested negative but I have made the decision not to travel to Miami for New Year’s Eve Party out of caution,” the rock star, 49, wrote via Instagram Stories. “Happy New Year and hope everyone stays safe!”
Acts who will still be performing include Saweetie, Jack Harlow, Brandi Carlile, Anitta, 24kGoldn and Kitty Ca$h.
Cyrus and Davidson’s special is replacing NBC’s New Year’s celebration, which is usually hosted by Carson Daly. The former “Total Request Live” host has been at the helm of the network’s New Year’s festivities since 2004.
COVID-19 forced NBC to cancel last year’s event and the last time Daly hosted was 2019 (going into 2020).
Armstrong was not the only star who dropped out of a NYE’s show for COVID-19-related reasons. LL Cool J was scheduled to headline ABC’s broadcast “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” However, he had to pull out after testing positive for the virus on Dec. 29.
“I know it’s disappointing to the millions of fans but my test came back positive for COVID, which means I’ll no longer be able to perform as scheduled at NYRE,” the “NCIS: Los Angeles” star said in a statement, as reported by Deadline. “We were ready and I was really looking forward to ringing in 2022 in my hometown in a special way, but for now I wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year. The best is yet to come!”
In a promo clip for the show, the 28-year-old “King of Staten Island” actor — and current bae to Kim Kardashian — shared his resolutions for the new year with the ex-Disney Channel star and songstress, 29.
“I usually make one and then I don’t follow it. So my New Year’s resolution this year is to not have one so I don’t let myself down again,” Davidson joked.
Earlier this month, the pair dished on their friendship, telling Jimmy Fallon that they got matching tattoos after Cyrus’ 2017 “SNL” appearance.
“We made this ‘SNL’ sketch where we were babies that were rapping — trap babies — one of the many brilliant ideas that I bring to the ‘SNL’ table,” Davidson joked of the skit that inspired their inks during an episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
“We said, ‘We babies,’ and for some reason, we looked at each other and were like, ‘That’s a great tattoo,’” Cyrus added, with Davidson explaining that “I got my tattoo guy to come to 30 Rock” to inscribe the declaration onto their respective bodies on-site at the iconic home of “SNL.”
“Should’ve known that was sketch,” the former “Hannah Montana” starlet said, stating that she asked to get the ink as soon as possible. “‘Can we get a tattoo?’ Before he pressed ‘send,’ the guy was there with needles, permanent ink.”
