Monsters, inc. is a movie that I have enjoyed since I was young. This movie is an animated Disney movie about monsters that scare young children as their job, and the loudness of the child’s scream creates energy for the town. The protagonist in this film is James P. Sullivan, also known as Sulley. In this movie, Sulley was the top scarer at monsters incorporated, he was naturally afraid of humans, because their touch could kill even the biggest monsters in a second. Until he meets Boo, who is a little girl who found her way out of the room and into the factory. He forms a special bond with her and brings her back to his apartment but must keep her hidden because all monsters are deathly afraid of humans, especially little children. He displays traits of being a hero such as naturally being stronger than everyone else and is the best at scaring, even from when he first stepped foot into the factory. Also, he comes from a great background of scarers, his dad being the talented and greatly respected Bill Sullivan.

On the other hand, Sulley also showed traits of being the villain. Throughout the movie, he tries to scare kids and make then scream as loud as possible, so he can be the top scarer. Sulley is being selfish and putting his needs of being the best, in front of the children’s well being. The children are alone and super scared when ever a monster comes into their room and scares them. This made me view Sulley as a scary, mean character, but later in the movie we can see his good side which changes your opinion. I think it added more drama and action in the plot when the protagonist does something bad that you wouldn’t expect him/her to do. If the characters were just “black” or “white”, then the plot could get boring or predictable because you know that the protagonist is going to save the day and the villain is going to try to stop them. Although this always happens, if the character is more “grey”, it adds more suspense and thrill as he is “saving the day”.
