INTRODUCTION

The fashion in the 1970s changed direction from the short skirts and plastic fashion of the 1960s.

From the use of florals to the influence of women wearing suits, Fashion in that

decade shaped and influenced how both men and women dressed for work and leisure.

Read more about the most notable fashion trends from the 1970s below:

LONG PRINTED DRESSES

Long skirts replaced the look of short dresses and skirts in the 1970s. Similar to dress length in

the Victorian era, many of the dresses were made of soft and feminine prints like paisley and

florals. The new decade of the 1970s embraced the era of young women celebrating peace love

and freedom.

The style of the 1970s reflected a nostalgic and romanticized era, recalling the Victorian

aesthetics with the use of high necklines, cinched waists and full length skirts.

WOMEN WEAR PANTS

The fashionable woman began wearing pants in the 1960s and 1970s.

By the influence of the feminist movement, women were taking greater strides to enter the

workforce. With the influence of “Le Smoking Suit” as created by designer, Yves Saint Laurent,

pants became an alternative to skirts and dresses.

Other designers quickly followed the example and designed jeans with wide hem, bell bottom

pants and matching pant suits with variations of prints to choose from.

Of course the trend of wide hems was widely popular amongst men’s fashion as well.

PEACOCK FASHION FOR MEN

Men’s fashion in the 1970s was an extension of the previous decade with

the influence of Peacock fashion.

From making a statement while wearing bright vivid styles, the fashion for men gravitated more

towards a mix of plaids, neutrals colors as well as corduroy.

Men’s fashion aligned with the androgynous style for women as well.

YVES SAINT LAURENT

French fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent, dominated the fashion industry in the 1960s and

1970ss. With his influence of androgynous fashion, his fashion revolutionized the use of women

wearing pants and jumpsuits. Until Saint Laurent dared to change everything, women were

sometimes refused entry to restaurants for wearing pants.

YSL

Saint Laurent was heavily influenced by other

cultures. He explored designed a collection in

1967 inspired by ethnic motifs and featured a

diverse group of models for his fashion show.

Saint Laurent was widely inspired to design

collections that shifted a movement in fashion.

His 1940s inspired collection named,

Liberation, showed women wearing square

shoulder suits posing like men.

As we get to know our history, we see that fashion will come back in full circle with what

influences the public, how we change our style and learn to break free from tradition.
