Angkor Thom

After Angkor Wat Temple, our next stop was the impressive Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire.

Angkor Thom was founded by King Jayavarman VII.

Angkor Thom is surrounded by a moat, the most spectacular part of which is the South Gate, with stone statues of demons and warriors standing along the way.

King Jayavarman VII was a Buddhist and promoted the Khmer people’s conversion from Hinduism to Buddhism during his reign.

TIP
As there are many local vendors at the Angkor Wat temple complex, bring cash and buy a refreshing coconut or a wonderful souvenir.

Faces of South Gate, Angkor Thom

The most beautiful places to visit in Angkor Thom are the Bayon, Baphuon, the Terrace of the Leper King, Phimeanakas, Preah Palilay, and the Terrace of the Elephants.

With its 54 towers and 216 smiling and mysterious faces, Bayon Temple is one of the most popular attractions at Angkor Thom.

After spending a few hours exploring, we went to Takeo, which is a pyramid of 5 levels and a total height of 40 meters. We climbed the steep stairs to enjoy the fantastic view.

Ta Prohm

Are you looking for the best place to visit in Angkor Archaeological Park? The small circuit includes Ta Prohm, which you may recognize from the movie Lara Croft: Tom Raider.

There has been little restoration work done on Ta Prohm, as it has been deliberately left as it was found so that everyone can see this impressive “jungle temple”.

To avoid waiting in line to take photos, visit Ta Prohm in the morning!

Our last stop on the Angkor Wat tour was Banteay Kdei, which used to be a Buddhist monastery. As this is a less popular sight, it is the perfect place to end your visit to Angkor Wat.

TIP
You can easily modify the Angkor Wat small circuit itinerary or add extra places.
