Christian Cowan Launches $2,500 Teletubbies Boots & Apparel Collection

London designer Christian Cowan has collaborated with the iconic children’s show “Teletubbies” to create an exclusive capsule collection featuring apparel and shoes inspired by the lovable characters in classic styles.

Dubbed “the collab you didn’t know you needed,” Christian Cowan x Teletubbies plays on campy fashions and Y2K aesthetics, marrying the two in a way that honors the show in a nostalgic manner. A standout of the multi-piece collection are the neon green pointed-toe boots inspired by the look of Dipsy, one of the cutesie main characters in the show.

“I’ve always done collaborations with things that hearken back to my childhood,” Cowan told FN. “Teletubbies was blow out of the water in the U.K. I was watching it every day.”

we’re doing more and more. We’re gonna do a few things that I like, literally just things I love.

As for the boots, the designer said they are star of the show, adding, “I wanted to have a bunch of items that anyone could wear, but then I wanted one that was a bit surrealist and just a bit more silly and played into hype culture.”

The boots are made of plush material with zip-up closures and feature Dipsy’s antennae-laden head sitting on the top of each boot complete with arms stretched out wide. The pair are undoubtedly a statement-making moment, equipped with pointed toes all sat atop stiletto heels. The boots are currently available on Christian Cowan’s website, and retail for a whopping $2,500.

“When deciding what our next collaboration would be, we were throwing around lots of pop culture icons,” wrote Cowan in a post made to the brand’s official Instagram account on March 11. “Then it struck us, let’s do THE icons.”

Apparel in the collection ranges from denim jackets and jeans to t-shirts and hoodies featuring screen prints of the characters alongside models in a ’90s-inspired fashion campaign. The campaign images are inspired by legendary photographer Richard Avedon’s work.

“What was fun about this was I just got to kind of do whatever I wanted. So I liked the idea that the Teletubbies are these legends and icons of entertainment so I wanted to recreate this like Richard Avedon photography style of like shooting,” Cowan explained. “And then they’ve got their autographs written on the garments — like they’re reissuing a vintage image.

“Teletubbies” is a television show that aired from 1997 to 2001 featuring an array of colorful creatures named Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po. The creatures frolicked and played in the idyllic Teletubbyland. The Teletubbies have televisions in their stomachs on which they watch real children. A large, pinwheel-shaped windmill began a “magical event” during each episode.
Cowan said to expect more collaborations from his namesake in the future, releasing multiple a year. “It’s literally going to be collabs with things I love,” he added. “I do think when you’re building a ready to wear brand that gets more and more serious, and you sell more and more, people have a habit becoming a little bit too overly serious about the whole gig. This should be fun.”
