We were cleaning out Little M’s art supplies the other day and we realized how many old crayons we seem to have collected. Little M and I discussed what to do with them and decided they would be perfect for a melted crayon craft. We have been wanting to make crayon shapes in the oven and these crayons were just right for our project.
First I preheated the oven to 250 degrees F. Then Little M removed the paper from the crayons and sorted them by color.
The next step is for grown up hands only – use a knife and chop the crayons into little pieces. The size can vary based on the size and shape of your molds.
Little M arranged the crayons in each mold, some were all one color and others were a mishmash of colors! We got these great dinosaur molds recently and had been waiting to use them.
When the molds are full, put them on a baking sheet and into the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until crayons are melted. Very carefully, so as to not spill any melted crayon, remove the baking sheet from the oven.
The crayons will harden as they cool. If your little ones are impatient, as we were, you can pop the molds into the freezer to hurry the process along.
After about 15-30 minutes, remove the molds from the freezer. Check to make sure the bottoms of the molds are cool (if not, return them to the freezer) and then pop them out of the silicone molds.
You can make these in so many shapes and for a variety of occasions (just make sure your molds are oven safe!) – hearts for Valentine’s Day, ghosts and bats for Halloween and even pretty little stars or sporty cars.
Crayons and Croissants 
This is a great idea!! I usually store the crayons and now I have some thing useful to do with it..,can i use oil pastels???
That’s a good question! I think it could work, maybe try it and see? Perhaps try that and also regular crayons so you have a couple of options to compare?
