Summary[edit]

Description
English: Construction of the Audion, the first triode vacuum tube, invented in 1906 by Lee De Forest. Part of the tube base is shown removed to reveal the terminals. The parts are:
F - Cathode consisting of a U-shaped platinum wire filament heated to incandescence by a current
G - Grid consisting of a 25 mil nickel wire in a zigzag shape
P - Plate (anode) electrode consisting of 9/16 in square of 5 mil sheet nickel
E - Evacuated sealed glass envelope. In later vacuum tubes this was evacuated to 10-9 atmosphere. In the Audion some gas was deliberately left in the tube.
T - Terminal pins plugged into a socket to connect the tube to the external circuit. The filament in vacuum tubes eventually burned out so they had to be replaced periodically.
The spacing between the filament, grid and plate in the drawing is exaggerated for clarity; in actual tubes the elements were only about 1 millimeter apart. Alterations to image: Removed existing labels and replaced them with red labels.
