JAKARTA -- Twenty years ago, Tangerang, a city about 30 km west of Jakarta, was for the most part a forgettable jumble of unimpressive housing and factories that belched out smoke. Things have changed. And they are going to change even more.
Local property developers have over the years snatched up vast amounts of land in the city and built malls and hotels. This has made the place more attractive to outsiders. The plan now is to create one of the biggest townships in the country, projected to rival in grandeur the modern architecture of Hong Kong and Singapore.
