Snorkelling on the Gili Islands?

should i snorkel or dive on gili trawangan day trip bali indonesia beach

The Gili Islands are some of the most picturesque locations in the world (big call we know). Think beautiful white sand beaches and warm crystal clear water. This makes it the ultimate location for snorkelling (and diving). We stayed on Gili Trawangan (take a look at the guide here) in November (shoulder season) and had an incredible experience. Take a look at a few thoughts and tips around snorkelling on the island, along with seeing some of the great shots we took with our Go Pro!

A few tips for snorkelling on the Gili Islands:

  • Stay on Gili Trawangan or Gili Meno: These islands are located nearby the ‘best’ snorkelling spots. In particular, Gili T has the amazing Turtle Point, while Gili Meno has the popular Underwater Sculptures.
  • If doing a tour, go early! Why? Tours from the islands to the snorkelling spots are very popular, and if you go mid morning or in the afternoon, you’ll likely be sharing these picturesque locations with many, many others. This can affect the water clarity, scare away some of the turtles/wildlife, and limit your ability to get that ‘perfect photo’ you’ve been hoping for. We booked our tour to start at 7am, managing to beat most (but not all) of the crowds.
  • Get a Go Pro – seriously, it’s worth it! The photos and videos are just incredible due to the amazing water quality.
  • Hire a snorkel and swim just off the shore. Both Gili T and Gili Meno have great locations right off the shore (see above). You can often hire a snorkel and flippers for around 20-30,000IDR each (approx. 2-3 AUD each, $6 AUD total). Well worth it!
  • Respect the wildlife. These beaches and locations give you access to amazing wildlife, in particular, very friendly turtles. However, make sure to respect them. Generally, avoid crowding them if there’s a few people around.
  • Want to see even more? Consider scuba diving! Gili Trawangan has a multitude of scuba diving centres. During our visit, one of Ky’s friends, Mitch, completed a number of dives to wrecks and reefs. If you aren’t trained, you can complete your certification here as well.

Spot on with this write-up, I truly think this web site wants rather more consideration. I’ll most likely be once more to learn way more, thanks for that info.
